Los Angeles 1973... In the morass of indulgent singer/songwriters and post hippie platitudes, Kim Fowley had a dream: A re-invention of mid 60s energy and ethics adapted for hard rock kids in a way ''little girls could understand'': The Hollywood Stars were born. The great white hope of Rock 'n' Roll and the ultimate Teen Band infused with Powerpop hooks, killer Proto Punk riffs with a sprinkling of Glitter and the right attitude. With monster tunes by Kim Fowley, Mars Bonfire (Born To Be Wild) along with band originals, the band were bound to be the Next Big Thing. Amongst all the excitement the band were signed to a major label and the scene was set for world domination. Only it never was... Fast forward to 2013. A ¼'' tape containing a rough mix of this legendary record is found. Unexpurgated and untainted by any superfluous effects, but mastered with the right care and attention, the album is finally released for the first time - 39 years too late! Remastered from the original recordings, these songs are released here for the rst time ever. Features the original versions of King of the Night Time World (covered by Kiss) and Escape (covered by Alice Cooper). Limited vinyl gatefold release (1000 copies worldwide) includes a booklet crammed with rare and unseen photos, as well as the extensive story of the Hollywood Stars' lost album, told in Kim Fowley's own words. ''I asked the guys if they wanted to be in a West Coast version of the New York Dolls, and they said yes.'' - Kim Fowley.

The Heavy Eyes - "He Dreams of Lions" on Kozmik Artifactz

The Heavy Eyes is a Memphis based psychedelic blues power trio including Tripp Shumake (vocals and guitar) Wally Anderson (Bass) and Eric Garcia (Drums).

"He Dreams of Lions" is their third album, recently released on the excellent german label Kozmik Artifactz.  The album was mixed, mastered, and recorded by Matt Qualls at Ardent Sudios, Memphis, TN.

The band published his self-titled record in 2011 and it immediately laid the foundations for the trio on the heavy blues scene. Their sophomore album, Maera, was released in 2012 and was largely seen as an improvement of their already famous playing.

So after three years of waiting, needless to say the expectations were high. But the band met them effortlessly with an album, probably their best to this day,  filled with hypnotic heavy riffs and fuzzy stoner jams. My personal favorite track: He Dreams Of Lions.

Purchase it here: http://shop.bilocationrecords.com/navi.php?suchausdruck=heavy+eyes+lion&JTLSHOP=d697e09682d380d6e1734c56e249c19a

The vinyl version is plated & pressed on high performance  in Germany with matt laquered 300gsm gatefold cover. It comes in red marbled yellow (handnumbered mailorder version), transparent yellow or black.

The Jetz - "Cracked Up"

The Jetz  are A 5-piece band from Cheshunt in Hertfordshire featuring Alex Kinder - vocals,  Den Pugsley - guitar / b. vocals;  Tony Skeggs - guitar / b. vocals; Trace Graham - bass / b.vocals;  Steve Bye / Andy Welsford (Wells) - drums.

The band was active from 1976 till late 1979 during which time they released the anthemic single "Catch Me" and went on to gig extensively, including two 5-week Danish tours at the beginning of 1978 and 1979.

Three of the band, Den, Tony and Andy, would re-surface as THE PENCILS (1981-84) while Trace Graham formed DREAM CYCLE 7 with ex-Pleaser Steve McNerney.

May 2011 saw the release of the album “JETZ ANTHOLOGY 1977-79”, featuring "Catch Me" and an additional 11 songs originally recorded by the band. (Queen Mum records).
The recently released "Cracked Up" is a collection of new songs which represent the group's first true proper album in 36 years!

Den explains "Working on the 'Anthology 1977-79' compilation in 2011 had stirred some ghosts and kicked up some sand. The five guys that used to be Jetz were suddenly Jetz again. We had 2 shows to perform in Berlin, a whole bunch of 35 year old songs to rehearse and an opportunity to hang out
again, drink too much and reminisce of those heady times in the late '70s when we were young guns. One conversational thread during those two nights spent in Berlin voiced the regret we'd never got around to recording a proper album back then. The 'Anthology' project had collected our old demos
from the shelves and it was great to see them finally see the light of day, but it was still a collection of demos rather than the album we shoulda made. In the summer of 2014, acting on our good friend Kidnap's encouragement, we decided to record some new songs for a proposed 4-track ep. We had
fun writing and recording them and before long, four songs turned into six - to nine - and before we knew it, we had twelve. I noticed coincidently, when supplying the song lyrics for the insert, that the very first line of the opening song echoed the sentiment raised in Berlin a few years back -
'Kinda got started but we never got it done'. Thirty-six years on... we finally did."

"Cracked Up" features 12 new songs of super catchy, fun, addictive, powerful pop with great lead and backing vocals, driving guitars and an ever pulsating rhythm section. Instant classics like the title track, "Cracked Up", "Government Man" or "Walking on James Street" the later bringing to mind The Jam and Squire.

This is a MUST for all fans of true Power Pop!

Dirty Streets - "White Horse"

Alive Natural sound Records is releasing today "White Horse" the fourth studio album of Memphis-based power-trio Dirty Streets.

Formed in 2008, Justin Toland (guitar/vocals), Thomas Storz (bass), and Andrew Denham (drums) found themselves brought together by a shared love of classic acts like MC5, James Brown, Humble Pie, and James Gang.

After years of playing shows, the band released two independent albums followed by their record label debut, Blades of grass on Alive natural sound records in 2013.

Following the release of this well-received  album, the band now delivers 11 new red-raw tracks of heavy boogie and psych-rock recorded at Ardent studio, with engineer Matt Qualls.

This album is definitely more fluid and natural,” Toland explained. “We made a big deal out of just feeling out the songs rather than getting them technically perfect. Percussion was definitely a compass as far as groove on this one. If we couldn’t play the tambourine, or shaker with feeling then it wasn’t cutting it. It was actually Budos Band that was a huge influence as far as groove goes for the writing of this record.”

Dirty Streets’ White Horse is available on Limited Vinyl, CD and digital formats. The stunning psychedelic cover art was created by Joshua Marc Levy of Asheville Art Family.

TWO NEW GREAT RECORDS ON Rum Bar Records

Boston based Rum Bar Records recently released 2 new great cds.

1) Kurt BAKER - Play It Cool

Kurt BAKER seems to be a real workaholic in the last couple of years. Besides his solo carrier he is playing, amongst others, with Brad Marino and Geoff Palmer in The New Trocaderos and has also a band in Spain, the aptly titled Bullet Proof Lovers.

"Play It Cool" is his third solo album and second release on Rum Bar Records and it arrives on the heels of last year's Brand New B-Sides compilation.

Personally, as much as i liked his early recordings, "Got It Covered" and "Rockin' For A Living",  I was not too keen of his "Brand New Beat" record which I found to be overproduced and lacking great songs.

"Play It Cool" on the other hand is a total different story. The man is back on the top of his game and he is delivering 12 perfect shots of power poppin' rock n' roll with hooks a plenty. If you need name dropping think The Yachts, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, The Jags (remember their 1979 hit "Back Of My Hand"?)

The whole record has a more "live" feeling to it and perfectly captures the fun and energy of the Kurt Baker band on stage. I saw them in cafe Bacchus a couple of years ago, and believe me, they kicked major ass! Absolutely GREAT!!! A MUST BUY!

PURCHASE IT HERE:

2) Nato Coles and the Blue Diamond Band - Promises To Deliver (Rum Bar Edition)

Over the last four years, Nato Coles & The Blue Diamond Band have released one single, two split seven-inches, and the acclaimed 2013 full-length "Promises To Deliver".

Rum Bar Records recently released an expanded CD reissue of Promises To Deliver - which supplements the album's nine songs with four seven-inch tracks, an unreleased number called "Pieces On The Ground", and a demo of "Julie (Hang Out A Little Longer)".

With inspiration ranging from The Replacements or early Green Day to  great songwriters like Bruce Springsteen or Tom Petty here is a new slice of great and heartfelt american rock'n'roll.
You know when you listen to this record that the man and his pals are not faking it and that he truly believes every single word he spits out.

V.A. - A Tribute To Shoes - Shoe Fetish

V.A. - A Tribute To Shoes - Shoe Fetish
In FLAC - Scans are included

  1. Too Late - DM3
  2. Karen - Matthew Sweet
  3. The Tube - Astropuppees
  4. Turnaround - Bobby Sutliff
  5. She Satisfies - Doug Powell
  6. Cruel You - Sparkle* Jets U.K.
  7. Found A Girl - Cloud Eleven
  8. I Can't Go Wrong - The Lolas
  9. Your Very Eyes - Jeffrey Foskett
  10. Curiosity - The Spongetones
  11. Hangin' Around With You - The Shazam
  12. Love Is Like A Bullet - Michael Carpenter
  13. I Miss You - Al Chan
  14. Your Imagination - The Masticators
  15. I Don't Know Why - Shane Faubert
  16. Tomorrow Night - Big Hello
  17. Only In My Sleep - Don Dixon/Marti Jones
  18. If All I Had Was You - Walter Clevenger & The Dairy Kings
  19. Okay - LMNOP
  20. When Push Comes To Shove - Matt Bruno
  21. The Things You Do - Chewy Marble
  22. Never Had It Better - The Tearaways

Strangely, the performances with female vocalists seem to work particularly well, so the Astropuppies "The Tube", The Masticators "Your Imagination" and Big Hello's "Tomorrow Night" all sound great, somehow the change to a feminine perspective definitely gives the songs a new edge. The better known performers, DM3, Matthew Sweet, The Shazam and Walter Clevenger, lend their distinctive voices to the songs but do not stray far from the originals. Particularly noteworthy attempts come from Sparklejets UK with a punchy "Cruel You", Doug Powell fairly rips through "She Satisfies" dropping in a successful but very un-Shoes-like guitar outburst, Michael Carpenter has some fun with a lively "Love Is Like A Bullet", and Don Dixon and Marti Jones perform a beautifully sensitive "Only In My Sleep".

The Lolas - Something You Oughta Know

The Lolas - Something You Oughta Know
In WAV - Scans are included

  1. We're Going Down To The Boathouse
  2. Dana The Chromium Girl
  3. Weird Daughter

  6. Light Up Every Doorway

  13. End Of The Summer
  14. Tim's Mom
  15. Ingrid Has A Plan
  16. All The Old Red Ink (Bonus Track)
  17. Can't See You (Bonus Track)

Something You Oughta Know doesn't stray far from the immaculate bubblegum/
jangle pop assault of the Lolas' previous releases. The Alabama combo are high-scoring students of the genre, and each heady blend of tight Byrds-like harmonies and Cheap Trick swagger is instantly catchy and deliciously transparent -- in a good way. They've got enough Gary Glitter/ELO rave-ups ("Little Deedra"), Nuggets-infused fist-pumpers ("Jungle Girl"), and sugary ballads ("Light Up Every Doorway") to satisfy the rottenest of sweet tooths, and despite the ultracompressed, a little too bright and radio-ready -- for 1977 that is -- production, they all work.  -AMG

I think i got this from Curty Ray way back in the day, but i'm not absolutely sure. Anyway, thanks to him.

15 Don't Change A Thing
16 Ramon Ghetto Chef 2
17 All The Old Red Ink
18 I Can Only Give You Everything
19 Dr. Apache
20 Wig Wam Bam

Tracks like 'Like The Sun', 'Me And Barbara Stanwyck', display the right amount of guitar muscle. 'The Selfish Song'  marries cool guitar riffs with an analog synth sound which gives a hint of bands such as The Cars, but the Lolas have their own sound and enough ideas not to be copyists. The band (or more precisely TIM BOYKIN who is handling all instruments) tips his hat to the past by covering The Squires 'I'm Going All The Way', The Litter's 'Action Woman', Them's 'I Can Only Give You Everything' and lastly The Sweet's 'Wig Wam Bam', all of which are treated with the right amount of reverence.

DM3 - West Of Anywhere

Once more Alive Natural sound delivers the goods: a very neat compilation of 18 remastered killers tracks of Australia's finest powerpop band, DM3.

This band should need no introduction if you are a regular viewer of this blog. But if you lived on Mars for the last twenty years here'a quick update: DM3 was an electric rock'n'roll outfit including ex-STEMS, Dom MARIANI on Vocals and Guitar, Pascal BARTOLONE on drums, Toni ITALIANO on bass and vocals and Ian CAMPBELL on guitar and vocals.

The band was best known for its melodic pop hooks, its high energy rock'n'roll guitars and Dom MARIANI's flawless songwriting.

Between 1993 AND 1998, the band released 3 official records: "One Time, Two Times, Three red light", produced by Mitch Easter, "Road to Rome" also produced by Mitch Easter and "Rippled Soul",produced by the band itself.

All their classic tracks are compiled here for your listening pleasure: "One time, two times devastated", "Second floor", "Give it up", "Can't get what you want",....plus a previously unreleased version of "Please don't Lie".

Reno Bo - "Lessons From A Shooting Star"

New York born songwriter, musician and producer Reno Bo recently released his the sophomore album "Lessons From A Shooting Star". Before relocating to Nashville TN, Bo spent the previous several years on the road playing bass with The Mooney Suzuki.

As a middle-school kid living in Poughkeepsie, New York, Bo started listening to the Beatles' White Album,  the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers and Led Zeppelin I, all things now considered as classic rock.

Years later, those early influences are on full display with "Lessons From a Shooting Star", an album that mixes the hooks and harmonies of classic pop music with the size, sweep and swagger of rock & roll. On this record, Bo as a talented multi-instrumentalist is handling virtually every job — from the songwriting to the bass guitar to the vocals to the production — himself. For a musician who'd spent the past decade touring the world as a member of other people's bands, "Lessons From a Shooting Star" was a chance to focus inward. It was a chance to make music that was completely his.

The Brighter Side," an amazing power-pop track co-written with Brendan Benson, brings to mind the BIG STAR #1 vibes while "Sweetheart Deal" evokes a young Tom Petty and "Mumbo Johnny" is a nod to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Looks like Bo has learned his lessons well.

Isaac Rother & The Phantoms - The Unspeakable Horror Of

Isaac Rother and The Phantoms call back to an era where rock n' roll was simple and dangerous. The voodoo magic of early rock n' rollers such as Bo Diddley and Screaming Jay Hawkins is seamlessly fused with tough 60's groups like the Animals and the tongue in cheek humor of classic novelty hits like Wooly Bully and Surfin' Bird

Today, with the world of music literally at our fingertips, the camp and ritual of rock n' roll has almost been forgotten, residing mainly in the stories and recordings of the past. Isaac Rother and the Phantoms bring back the golden mystic of this past. They do so with top notch musicianship and hard rocking original material, rendering them a cut above the rest. Behold… The Unspeakable Horror of Isaac Rother and The Phantoms!

The band will be touring Europe this fall, check out the dates:

Optic Nerve - Forever and a Day

Optic Nerve - Forever and a Day
In wav - Scans are included

1 Hopin' To See You
2 Any Day Now
3 Real Go-Getter
4 Hard To Keep
5 A Long Way To Go
6 Call On Me
7 What's Been Missing
8 She's Alright
9 Take Me
10 Tompkins Square Blues

It is incredibly unjust how the Optic Nerve did not achieve a similar success to contemporaries R.E.M.; who, to begin with, owed a great deal to the jingle-jangle chimes of mid-'60s Rickenbacker-fuelled bands. Forever & a Day's ten songs were recorded in 1988 in the music building just off Times Square. And why a label didn't pick them up is unbelievable. Okay, admittedly, in 1988 there wasn't a huge market for Dylanesque rock & roll, but still, the quality of the compositions and performances on these recordings are immeasurably good. If there had been such a thing as the "no depression" or "alt-country" movements in 1988, the Optic Nerve would have definitely been one of the leading bands.

"Van Buren Wheels" 10"

"Van Buren Wheels" 10"

Four out of five of the Wheels were cab drivers (hence the name). Van Buren Street for years was known as Phoenix’s center for drugs, prostitution, cheap motels and illegal street activity in general. Four out of five of the Wheels were heroin addicts at various time. Heroin broke up the band. Vince died in 2009, apparently after tripping over a show or something and hitting his head. Jaime, Steve, Chrissy and Danny live in Phoenix. They still play music. Brew lives in WA. Scott is a fireman or something. The band played 60s punk, blue-eyed soul, British r&b, Dutchbeat and Northwest frat covers live, in addition to their originals. They were high-energy and played most frequently at Tempe AZ’s legendary Long Wong club. There were no other bands playing this kind of music in the Phoenix area at the time, but several popped up during and after the Wheels.

Will be released on 09 October 2015  on Slovenly Recordings

8. Lay It Down
9. Heaven Knows
10. Standin' On The Corner
11. Thanks For The Memory - bonus track
12. Raining In My Champagne - bonus track

This is the soundtrack to what is most probably the best rock movie ever made, Slade In Flame. The year was 1974 and Slade had done most things by then, toured the world, had records straight into the charts at number 1 (the first time since the Beatles had done one decade earlier), number one albums and a movie was the next most logical move. However, fans were not ready or not expecting the movie that hit the cinema. Exposing the dark side to the music business was a shrewd and brave move. Most fans were expecting `a hard days' night type of comedy.

PRONTO "Pronto"

PRONTO "Pronto"

Slovenly Recordings presents a new black jewel in the rough from Australia: Melbourne scuzz squad PRONTO, and their self-titled LP will steal your purse n’ pills before kicking holes in your speakers! “Pronto” hits hard from the gate with a rare breed of aggression that mercilessly attacks your better senses with scraping vocal chords, three or less guitar chords and brash, unrelenting rhythmic fuckery. This decroded piece of plastic devolves from hammering rock’n’roll into psyched-out meltdowns, never neglecting the breed of anthemic choruses that were perfected during the first wave of UK punk in a twisted post-punk application. Pronto is making good with ruthless threats of thuggish damage. They’re knocking at your door, and you need the hurt.

The Super Fuzz - Super Famous

The Super Fuzz (Chris Alvy on vocals and guitar, bassist Darrell Killingsworth, drummer Todd Taulbee and guitarist Eric Sanchez) captures the vintage 70’s rock sound like no others.

Classic Rock influences such as the Beatles, Bowie, The Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, Jason Falkner, Cheap Trick , and Jellyfish, seamlessly pervade their music. The group’s songs convey a new hipness and stylistic flair that give them their own niche in today’s rock & roll landscape.

With their sophomore effort, "Super Famous", The Super Fuzz maintains their 70's influence but this time combines it with an alternative edge of 1990's and 2000's indie and alternative sounds (think Fastball or Redd Kross)

Most of the new tracks clock under the 3.00 minutes and the material is more concise than their previous release from 2012 ("Art Noise"), but also more uptempo with their trademark lush harmonies still perfectly in place.

Catchy choruses, frantic crunchy guitar riffing and a gift for writing instant power pop hits.

The Cush - ‘Transcendental Heat Wave’

The Texan husband and wife duo of Burette and Gabrielle Douglas (aided by Josh Daugherty & Todd Harwell) are the creative core and identity of The Cush, formed in Dallas, TX in 2000.

They have returned with their 4th LP, "Transcendental Heatwave" (Follyphone Records), an album that takes the listeners on a cosmic journey to 90’s shoegaze (the opening track "Heavy Psych" could have been featured on any of My Bloody Valentine's records) and beyond (the brilliantly hypnotic "Broken radio").

The signature sound of this Lone Star State band is made of vintage tape delays, twang, reverb, Fuzzy guitars and ethereal female/male vocals.

Favorite tracks : "Broken Radio", "Phantom Girl" and "Summer's Gone

The Barreracudas - Can Do Easy

Oops Baby Records from Brooklyn, New York, recently released “Can Do Easy”, the sophomore effort and long-awaited follow up LP to The Barreracudas critically acclaimed debut LP "Nocturnal Missions" (2011)

Atlanta's quintet which includes members hailing from Gentleman Jesse and His Men, Beat, Beat Beat and The Hiss, delivers a fantastic old school super hooky power pop blend , that brings to mind all the great seventies poppers like Cheap Trick, the Shoes, the Raspberries, the Dwight Twilley band and also the dirty glamers like Sweet or Slade.

The 12 tracks on this record clock under 31 minutes but all the songs here are catchy as hell and they prove to be a lesson in songwriting that should benefit to all of the glampoppers wanna-bes around the world who cannot write half a good song!

The record features a revamped version of last year’s “Promises” single, which got much airplay through the fine folks at WFMU – rising to #1 on the WFMU charts - and beyond.

The guitars on this record have just the right crunch and the loud and punky production totally fits these perfect power pop songs! Can Do Easy” is the most fun album of the year, from the foot-stomping opener of “The Jerk” to the humorous howl of “Shampoo” to the heartbreaking melodies of “Dreaming”… these are soon to be classic rock ‘n’ roll songs!

"Good job on that one, jerk!"
