10. Standin' On The Corner
11. Thanks For The Memory - bonus track
12. Raining In My Champagne - bonus track

This is the soundtrack to what is most probably the best rock movie ever made, Slade In Flame. The year was 1974 and Slade had done most things by then, toured the world, had records straight into the charts at number 1 (the first time since the Beatles had done one decade earlier), number one albums and a movie was the next most logical move. However, fans were not ready or not expecting the movie that hit the cinema. Exposing the dark side to the music business was a shrewd and brave move. Most fans were expecting `a hard days' night type of comedy.

PRONTO "Pronto"

PRONTO "Pronto"

Slovenly Recordings presents a new black jewel in the rough from Australia: Melbourne scuzz squad PRONTO, and their self-titled LP will steal your purse n’ pills before kicking holes in your speakers! “Pronto” hits hard from the gate with a rare breed of aggression that mercilessly attacks your better senses with scraping vocal chords, three or less guitar chords and brash, unrelenting rhythmic fuckery. This decroded piece of plastic devolves from hammering rock’n’roll into psyched-out meltdowns, never neglecting the breed of anthemic choruses that were perfected during the first wave of UK punk in a twisted post-punk application. Pronto is making good with ruthless threats of thuggish damage. They’re knocking at your door, and you need the hurt.

The Super Fuzz - Super Famous

The Super Fuzz (Chris Alvy on vocals and guitar, bassist Darrell Killingsworth, drummer Todd Taulbee and guitarist Eric Sanchez) captures the vintage 70’s rock sound like no others.

Classic Rock influences such as the Beatles, Bowie, The Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, Jason Falkner, Cheap Trick , and Jellyfish, seamlessly pervade their music. The group’s songs convey a new hipness and stylistic flair that give them their own niche in today’s rock & roll landscape.

With their sophomore effort, "Super Famous", The Super Fuzz maintains their 70's influence but this time combines it with an alternative edge of 1990's and 2000's indie and alternative sounds (think Fastball or Redd Kross)

Most of the new tracks clock under the 3.00 minutes and the material is more concise than their previous release from 2012 ("Art Noise"), but also more uptempo with their trademark lush harmonies still perfectly in place.

Catchy choruses, frantic crunchy guitar riffing and a gift for writing instant power pop hits.

The Cush - ‘Transcendental Heat Wave’

The Texan husband and wife duo of Burette and Gabrielle Douglas (aided by Josh Daugherty & Todd Harwell) are the creative core and identity of The Cush, formed in Dallas, TX in 2000.

They have returned with their 4th LP, "Transcendental Heatwave" (Follyphone Records), an album that takes the listeners on a cosmic journey to 90’s shoegaze (the opening track "Heavy Psych" could have been featured on any of My Bloody Valentine's records) and beyond (the brilliantly hypnotic "Broken radio").

The signature sound of this Lone Star State band is made of vintage tape delays, twang, reverb, Fuzzy guitars and ethereal female/male vocals.

Favorite tracks : "Broken Radio", "Phantom Girl" and "Summer's Gone

The Barreracudas - Can Do Easy

Oops Baby Records from Brooklyn, New York, recently released “Can Do Easy”, the sophomore effort and long-awaited follow up LP to The Barreracudas critically acclaimed debut LP "Nocturnal Missions" (2011)

Atlanta's quintet which includes members hailing from Gentleman Jesse and His Men, Beat, Beat Beat and The Hiss, delivers a fantastic old school super hooky power pop blend , that brings to mind all the great seventies poppers like Cheap Trick, the Shoes, the Raspberries, the Dwight Twilley band and also the dirty glamers like Sweet or Slade.

The 12 tracks on this record clock under 31 minutes but all the songs here are catchy as hell and they prove to be a lesson in songwriting that should benefit to all of the glampoppers wanna-bes around the world who cannot write half a good song!

The record features a revamped version of last year’s “Promises” single, which got much airplay through the fine folks at WFMU – rising to #1 on the WFMU charts - and beyond.

The guitars on this record have just the right crunch and the loud and punky production totally fits these perfect power pop songs! Can Do Easy” is the most fun album of the year, from the foot-stomping opener of “The Jerk” to the humorous howl of “Shampoo” to the heartbreaking melodies of “Dreaming”… these are soon to be classic rock ‘n’ roll songs!

"Good job on that one, jerk!"

Mark Pountney - Mark II

Liverpudlian Mark Pountney's sophomore album, the aptly titled "Mark II" released earlier this year, is a splendid collection of various tunes with an amazing 60's vibe. On this record, Mark managed to capture the spirit and the sound of the sixties like no one else.

Here is what Mark told yours truly about this record : "My first band was called the Yarbles (a reference from the film A Clockwork Orange) this later changed to the Marbles. The line up included Edgar Summertyme on bass (The Stairs, Paul Weller, St Etienne) and, for a short time, Russell Pritchard  (The Zutons and now with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds).

The songs I wrote and performed, at that time, now appear on "Mark II". Studio time was expensive back then so we only cut a few demos. I thought the songs still had some mileage so began re-recording them last year. I'm not with a band at the moment so I played all of the instruments myself and also took care of the recording and production.

So "Mark II" was like taking care of unfinished business. It helped me improve my musicianship and technical skills. The album covers for "Mark I" and "Mark II" were designed by my Dad, Derrick."

As far as plans for the future are concerned Mark adds: "The last couple of years have been important - particularly in terms of recording.  I hope to put an album out each year. I'm half way through "Mark III". This will be a blend of the Powerpop and the Americana styles and will bring things more up to date. I have around 200 songs and there are still a few from the early days that I'd like to revisit."

The CD is on heavy rotation here at the Rat house and it seems I just can't get enough of this Beatle-esque pop. So there is only one advice I can give to all the viewers of this blog: go and buy this brilliant record!

The Mandates - "In The Back Of Your Heart" LP

The Mandates is a fabulous Calgary based rock'n'roll outfit including BRADY: guitar, vocals/ MATT: guitar, vocals /JIMMY - bass /WARREN - drums.

Fast rhythms and sweet melodies is what defines the electrified pop/punk/glam of the quartet that has come up with its Sophomore full length effort, "In The Back Of Your Heart" a while ago on TAKEN BY SURPRISE records.

On their new album, The Mandates blast through 11 new tracks of fresh-sounding, exhuberant rock and roll that sounds like it's being played for the fun of it.

From the first chords of the opening track "Something Wrong" till the last notes of "I got my eyes (in the back of your mind)" it is obvious that the endlessly gigging has made the band tighter than ever and The Mandates have become an unstoppable rock and roll machine churning out an impressive collection of instant hits that will appeal to every fan of The Exploding Hearts, The Dead Boys, The Ramones or The Boys!

In Flac - Scans are included

1 Let's Dance
2 Mr. President
3 Missfortune
4 Hollywood Nightmare
5 Pressure

7 Heartache
8 Letter From The U.S.A.
9 Can't Give You Reasons
10 Jeux Sans Frontires (Game With No Rules)
11 New York Paranoia

Due to the cold war of the time, the original title had to be changed to "Pressure" when it was released in the USA. The track list was also modified and a new artwork elaborated.  Production wise, this record is better that "Strange Man, Changed Man", unfortunately as far as the songwriting is concerned, it's a bit of a disappointment though. Got this a while back from PPC, so all the credit goes to Angelo.

James Leg - Below The Belt out on September 4th via Alive Naturalsound Records.

John Wesley Myers, aka James Leg, is not exactly your average singer. As a matter of fact, he likes to describe himself as a "growler, a shouter, a composer, and a Fender Rhodes finger-fucker".

The son of a Texas preacher, raised in the South on gospel music, James Leg (Black Diamond Heavies, The Immortal Lee County Killers, Cut In The Hill Gang) has cut his sophomore solo album , the aptly titled "Below The Belt", at Masonic Sounds Studio in Dayton, Kentucky. The album was mixed by renowned producer/engineer Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit.

The album opens with "Dirty South" a mean rocker driven by a menacing organ riff. "Casa de Fuego" is a great follow up with mariachi like horns and its tequila flavoured atmosphere."Up Above My Head" is a soulful gospel rendition of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's song.

And this track, more than any other, makes you wonder if Leg's music greatly reflects his torments being torn apart between his religious upbringing and the "devil's music" (i.e. rock'n'roll) he is now playing and preaching to the masses.

The devil's music is still ALIVE and James leg is its ultimate preacher. The one who's going to hit you where it hurts: "Below The Belt"

James Leg's Below The Belt will be released on limited vinyl, CD and digital formats on September 4th via Alive Naturalsound Records.

8. Lady From the U.S.A.
9. I'm a Believer
10. Sarah Smiles
11. Turn On the Light

Bram Tchaikovsky (Peter Bramall) left the Motors to form his own band, releasing this great debut album in 1979. "Girl Of My Dreams" was the hit, but just about every track is wonderful. Aside from the hit, other outstanding tracks include "Lady From The USA", "I'm The One That's Leaving", "Lonely Dancer", my personal favorite "Sarah Smiles", and the title track. This is one of the great albums from the heyday of power pop. The mix of upbeat and slower tunes is especially effective. After this, Bram made 2 more albums but with his commercial fortunes falling he retired from the music biz, and as far as I know he hasn't been heard from since. This CD is apparently out of print and selling for insane prices!

It features both the original mono version plus the original 1966 stereo mix in band's intended running order, the latter being different to the alternative stereo version used in the award-winning box set 'Sign of the Three Eyed Men'. The set also includes five hitherto unreleased alternative versions which are the producer/engineer Bob Sullivan's original stereo studio mixes. The recordings were remastered and remixed in 2007 by the original producer Walt Andrus. `The fearless trailblazers of psychedelia and one of the most kick-ass rock bands ever... The Last Killers - Dangerous

Since the demise of The Jim Jones Revue, the best thing in rock'n'roll has come from Cesena, Italy, and is called The Last Killers! The quartet (MATTEO ESPANADA - vox & guitars;
DANI BAJO - vox & bass; THE MAN - keyboards, percussions & vox; Mr. PINNA - drums, percussions) has recently released its latest full length intitled "Dangerous" and this is exactly what it is all about: Danger is something rock'n'roll is cruelly missing these days! Nowadays all the bands want to play it safe. But not the Last Killers. They exhale danger and they have a killer fuzz sound just about to blow your brains out.

Here you have it all rolled in one: Little Richard ("Oh my Soul"), The Sonics ("She's got it") , The Stooges, The MC5 ("Revolution now"). But don't get me wrong, The last Killers are not about revival! It's obvious they take their influences from the 50's or the 60's but they come up with a very fresh and today sound .

Over the last couple of years, the band has been touring Europe several times : Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Spain and the United Kingdom, mostly in the r'n'r underground club circuit but also at main festivals such as Cosmic Trip, Festival beat, Drakula fest, and so on. They also opened for bands such as Thee Oh Sees, The Fleshtones, Lords of Altamont, Cynics or The Fuzztones....

This is an absolute MUST BUY for every rock'n'roll music fan!

Pretty Lightning - A Magic Lane Of Light And Rain

From Saarbrücken, Germany, comes Pretty Lightning, a band consisting of Sebastian Haas and Christian Berghoff. The duo has recently released their sophomore album,  A Magic Lane Of Light And Rain, via Cardinal Fuzz and Sound Effect Records.

Except, maybe, for the closing track "Graveyard Howls", forget about the delta blues of their debut album, There are witches in the woods. This time, the duo has embraced the cosmic sounds inherited from the 70's krautrock bands. As if they were finally a peace with their German legacy.

This new record is psychedelic to the bone and it will melt your brain like some magical mushrooms. The Eerie vocals drenched in reverb are inducing strange atmospheres and unusual colours.  A Magic Lane Of Light And Rain is what the title of this record promises, and it delivers and then some. Just close your eyes and let Pretty Lightning take you on a trip to the inner you.

Purchase it here: https://prettylightning.bandcamp.com/

The WILD WILD WETS - "14th Floor"

The new french label BIG TOMATO, from Bordeaux, recently released "14th Floor", the amazing debut full length of San Diego, CA, new psychedelic surfers The WILD WILD WETS.

The band includes Mike Turi - Vocals / Synth; Taejon Romanik - Guitar; Yegor Mackey - Bass; Marco Piro - Drums + John Kelley, the projectionist, who takes care of all the visuals effects. The word has it that these shows have been compared to Jefferson Airplane 1966/67 when their music incorporated Jerry Abram's Headlights visual art performances.

WWWets' songs are drenched in reverb and  delay and find their inspiration in 60's garage rock,  surf, kraut, and psychedelia. And if the album's title is a obvious nod to the 13th Floor Elevator,  one can also feel the influence of Spacemen 3 or the Velvet underground

The wild wild wets are organically blending  together  old and  new sounds  in one big sonic maelstrom to  create  something  authentic and perfectly original and fresh. They take the listener to a cosmic roller-coaster ride through his brain and leave his mind panting for more.... The result, at the end of the trip, is the album "14th Floor".

Watch the Wild Wild Wets perform a stripped down version of the title track of their latest album.

And the electric version of the same track:

DIRTY FENCES - Full Tramp

Reno based SLOVENLY RECORDS recently released the sophomore full length effort of the Dirty Fences a bunch of wild weirdos from New York City.

One track on this record is named "Endless Party" and this is exactly what it's all about here : a great rock n roll album to have a fun time with.

I personnally prefer the sing-along power punk side of the Dirty Fences. When the band is churning out muted driving guitars and ultra catchy chorus the Dirty Fences are not too far away from the likes of Matthew Melton and Warm Soda, which is perfect in my book. Check out for example "Judy (Don't Go)" and its funny tribute video to girlgroups like the Shangri-Las, "Give Me A Kiss" or the previously mentioned "Endless Party".

For for those of you who prefer some heavy kick ass action, go to "Heartbeater" or the album's title tune and "High School RIP" that bring to mind the classic 70's Alice Cooper. A killer and brilliant album for the summer that i totally recommand!

Order it here (on LP, CD or Cassette):
http://slovenly.bandcamp.com/album/dirty-fences-full-tramp-lp

These crazy guys will tour the USA this summer, check them out live:
