Mother’s Children - "Lemon"

Mother’s Children are a glam-influenced power pop band from Ottawa.

"Lemon" is their sophomore effort released on vinyl by the nice people at TAKEN BY SURPRISE and on CD by our good friend Yuki at SP RECORDS (Official release date in Japan is June 18).

Since "That’s Who!", in 2010, the band has quite improved itself as far as song crafting is concerned but do not worry, this platter is everything but mellow. "Lemon" is a sparkling explosion of wild guitar riffs, brilliant drumming, strong melodies and impressive vocal harmonies.

All the songs are so great, it's almost impossible to pick a favorite track. Maybe, when forced to with a gun pointed to the back of the head, one could mention "Helen mustn't know" or "Fair".

If you like your powerpop with a lot of POWER and a bit of Pop, this is without any doubt the perfect record. Definitely a must buy!

The Rubber City Rebels are an American protopunk band from Akron, Ohio, that formed in 1976.

The original line-up of the band consisted of Rod Firestone (vocals), Buzz Clic (guitar), Donny Damage (bass), Stix Pelton (drums) and Pete Sake (keyboards). In their early years, the Rebels were fans (and friends) of fellow Greater Cleveland-area bands The Dead Boys and Devo. Their breakout show was opening for The Dead Boys at legendary New York City rock club CBGB in 1977. This led to a split EP with The Bizarros, entitled From Akron, which was released that year. Firestone and Clic would go on to open the Crypt in Akron, at the time the only punk rock club in the Midwest. Bands including The Dead Boys, Devo, Pere Ubu and the Bizarros played at this club.

The Rebels moved to Los Angeles in 1978, minus Pelton and Sake, and gained considerable fame on the Sunset Strip. They would frequently headline at the famous Whisky A Go-Go for bands such as The Knack, The Dickies and The Plimsouls. Following some personnel changes in the band, the Rebels signed a deal with Capitol Records helped in no small way by Doug Fieger, lead singer of The Knack (who were also signed to Capitol) and a self-professed fan of the band. The Rebels debut, self-titled album was released in 1980. Although praised by critics, sales of the album never vaulted the band past its underground status and they did not follow up with a second release.

The Sirens - The Sirens

7. Destroy That Boy
8. Gudbuy T' Jane
9. Don't Slander Me
10. Ain't Gonna Cry No More
11. Push
12. I'm Blue

The bulk of this debut was recorded in a 48 hour frenzy at Tarbox Studios by Michael Ivins of the Flaming Lips. Taking his cue from a description of their sound as some where between the Shangrilas and Black Sabbath, Ivins perfectly captures the lethal combination of loud fuzz guitars and serious singing that sets these girls apart from the usual “Detroit Garage Sound”. Of course, a rock record from Detroit wouldn’t be complete without Ghetto Recorders. This record is truly graced by 3 glam-basted, Jim Diamond produced tracks, including a cover courtesy of the little known in the states, pre NY Dolls British rock kings (queens?), The Hollywood Brats. Speaking of covers- The Sirens unapologetically mine the endless supply of nuggets that inspire them- The offerings on this record run the full gamut of their flawless taste from Roky Erickson to Suzi Quatro, the Equals to Timi Yuro. While firmly rooted in ’70s Glam, the girls defiantly place no restrictions on their musical horizons.

The band reinvents infamous songs played at Altamont as you've never experienced them before. Jake 'The Preacher' Cavaliere gathers together past Lords members resulting in an all-star line including members of Primadonna, The Chelsea Smiles, the Bomboras, MC5 and The Superbees. With extensive liner notes and artwork by Detroit's renowned Chris Kro paired with interpretations of classics by The Rolling Stones, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Jefferson Airplane and more make this album a quintessential piece of The Lords legacy and an epic tribute to the definitive end to The Summer of Love.

A million thanks to Joey R.A.MONE for this AMAZING contribution.
