Acapulco Lips - Acapulco Lips

Acapulco Lips are an amazing psych/surf band hailing from Seattle, Washington and consisting of Maria-Elena Juarez - Bass/Vocals; Christopher Garland - Guitar/Vocals; Davy Berruyer - Drums. The Seattle trio just released their self titled debut album "Acapulco Lips" earlier this month on the freshly-minted Killroom Records

The band started out in 2012 and the trio is bound together by a studied adoration towards the loud, reckless, rebellious sonic traditions of psych, garage, soul, and surf rock. What comes out of these obsessions is the interpretation of the band’s favorite Sixties sounds, from transporting guitar jangles, assertively revved up percussion, boogie-friendly bass breakdowns, topped with disarmingly charming melodies.

Just listen to my favorite track, "Tonight", and you too will  surrender to Maria's sugary voice and to the band's take on intemporel rock'n'roll.

Maria supplies the vox on top and the bass below, galvanizing their live performances with radiant, bubbling style and energy on stage. Guitar player Christopher delivers waves of surf solos distorted through a thick layer of fuzz. Davy brings his drumming to the front of your ears and the tips of your tapping toes, his approach steeped in classic rock ‘n’ roll stylings.

This is a brilliant debut record that is very strongly recommended. Purchase it Here

SULFUR CITY “Talking Loud” on Alive Naturalsound

SULFUR CITY is a Canadian blues influenced band hailing from Sudbury, Ontario and consisting of Lori Paradis - Vocals/Electric Washboard; Jesse Lagace - Guitar/ Vocals; Steve Smith - Bass/ Vocals; Sam King - Drums/ Vocals; Keith Breit - Keys.

Everybody knows Patrick Boissel's fondness for everything HEAVY BLUES related, so it's not a big surprise the band's debut album is released on Alive Naturalsound. This is exactly where this band belongs. And the record label aptly points out that SULFUR CITY  is the first female-fronted band on Alive!

But what a band: a very tight rhythm section that keeps on pulsating all through the 11 original tracks, a keyboard player whose groovy organ loops sometimes bring to mind the late 60's Brian Auger, a guitar player and co-leader of the band who's an expert in heavy riffing.

And then there is singer/electric washboard player Lori Paradis, often seen as Grace Slick, Patti Smith and Janis Joplin all rolled in one. Lori has been a truck driver on a construction crew, a bartender and a house painter among other odd jobs. And this reflects in her lyrics. Where Patti Smith's rants were all about poetry, Lori's ones are more about social comments ("Pockets" : " There is nothing in this world that is  free except a whole lotta love and some misery. You got the government, you got the corporations, you got the welfare line all trying to keep you down, all trying to keep you silent!") or alienation by television ("War going on").

Sulfur City refers to band's home town.  A mining community where sulfur has been pumping into the air since 1928. It made the landscape black, dirty and the air thick and heavy. It's something Lori and the guys can relate to and has influenced the music they write. You can feel that this band is for real and that they mean every word they write.

“Talking Loud” was recorded at the infamous Gas Station Recording studio by Dale Morningstar (Cowboy Junkies, Neko Case) : the result is a fantastic heavy blues album with a strong political view. Highly recommended if you don't wanna die a moron.

This item will be released on May 27 2016. Pre-order it here :

13 You Gonna Wreck My Life
14 Take It From Diddley

What really comes across on this record is the band's energy and dynamism - the wide range of influences bounce off each other explosively, creating a sound with a definite and unique edge. There is a riotous sense of fun in the party groove attitude of tracks like "Party Girl", "When You Gonna Learn" and "The Jinx"; whilst the downtempo tracks ooze cult cool on "Catwoman' Strut" and "Burlesque Queen", co-written with Tura Satana, star of the film "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" and sung smokily by Kay Elizabeth. Then there are the surf-guitar instrumentals, "Eat My Dust A Phonic" opens the album with a high speed trip down a 60's speedway complete with samples, whilst Mariachi horns add spice to the surf groove of "Showman Twang Tiki Gods". The delta-blues of "Wrecking My Life" adds to the nostalgic Americana and we are even treated to an Instrumental version of the Sonic's "Shot Down" and a tribute to a certain influence on "Take It From Diddley".

B1 Starting To See

Front man Matthew Melton of Bare Wires seemed to care about two things: writing hook heavy garage songs and taking these songs on the road every chance he could get. Whether he was touring the U.S. with Thee Oh Sees, opening for Mark Sultan in Europe, or playing a house show somewhere in between, the band just never stopped.Yet, after spending the last three years being the uncontested kings of the road, Bare Wires are dead. The Oakland staple crumbled during SXSW this year. After failed performances one member ended up hospitalized and another MIA. Melton packed up the van and headed home, knowing that Bare Wires had run its course.

From the ruins of this tour comes the last Bare Wires record. The album unintentionally takes us through the Bare Wires timeline. Melton’s influences unfold from his early worship of Stooges/Gories to the later imprints of Glam/Power Pop-heavy records recalling T-Rex and Gary Glitter. Although it may not have been evident while churning out these final bittersweet songs that this would be the end of Bare Wires. Melton certainly made it count. From the ashes of Bare Wires comes Melton’s final masterpiece, Idle Dreams.
