Before Jeff "Monoman" Connolly formed Boston's seminal garage rock terrorists the Lyres,
he was in a late-'70s prototype known as DMZ. With the exception of a few musicians, DMZ
and the Lyres were essentially same-sounding bands; DMZ just played with a little more
speed and punk verve. Oddly enough, during the late-'70s signing frenzy of any band even
remotely associated with the punk scenes in Boston and New York City, DMZ got a shot with
Sire Records. The label, exhibiting near-total artistic myopia, teamed the band up with goofball
has-beens Flo and Eddie as producers. While the resulting record was panned, it's far from a
disaster, due mainly to DMZ's ferocity and trashy ebullience. Fans of mid-'60s rock and
speedy trash-rock and whiny Farfisa organs, will love DMZ.

After the break-up of The Hellacopters in 2008, Andersson started to work on a solo album, recording all instruments of eight songs by himself, however Andersson changed his mind and decided that it would be better to form a band. Andersson recruted Dolf de Borst, Tobias Egge and Thomas Eriksson, all of which he had worked previouly with in Cold Ethyl a cover band he formed shortly after the break-up of The Hellacopters. During the recording of the bands self titled album Andersson also enlisted help from several old friends, including Dregen, Anders Lindström, Robert Pehrsson, Neil Leyton and others. While Andersson insists that Imperial State Electric is a band and not a solo career or a side project he also acknowledges the fact that the band might have a revolving line-up of members including himself on drums instead of guitar. In terms of dogged perseverance, ignoring passing musical trends to stick to their chosen genre of 60s garage-psych for nearly 30 years, The FUZZTONES qualify as one of the ultimate cult bands, frugging somewhere between The Cramps and The Fleshtones. Formed out of downtown New York’s post-punk melting pot by singer (and only constant member) Rudi Protrudi, the group were named after the mid-60s foot pedal which distinguished the Stones’ Satisfaction, making their recording debut with 1984 single Bad News Travels Fast, on which guitarist Elan Portnoy is credited with “lead grunge” years before the Seattle explosion. The following year saw their debut album, Lysergic Emanations, reaffirming their trademark sound of mysterioso Farfisa organ, sneering vocals and dirty guitar riffs, which has continued until the present on different labels with changing line-ups.With their huge back catalogue and eventful history, The Fuzztones deserve the box set-with-booklet treatment. Meanwhile, LA’s Cleopatra has cobbled together this highly-entertaining release, starting with the first single and featuring another 24 tracks, with highlights including a belting live version of Action Speaks Louder Than Words, spooked Ward 81 (whose video inspired the Ramones’ Psycho Therapy) and Gotta Get Some, one of many tracks which capture that 60s garage production to an uncanny degree.

Originally issued through Mushroom Records' White Label on vinyl, the album only saw limited CD release at that time. In the early 90s Rolling Stone Magazine included it in the top 100 Australian releases of all time. The reissue includes a bonus disc with 15 B-sides & live recordings (many of which are available on CD for the first time), 'Sad Girl' (Single Version), 'Grooviest Girl In Town', 'My Beach', 'Can't Forget That Girl' (original demo previously unreleased) & 10 live recordings from the Old Melbourne Hotel, 4/18/1986. What else does one have to say about the CUTE LEPERS other than "fucking brilliant"?!!! Damn, but I am a sucker for pop sensibilities and hooks, and Nix, Kicks, and company have included them in abundance through the entire album. When I first listened to Smart Accessories, I thought that it fell short of their amazing Can't Stand Modern Music debut and that maybe they were falling victim to the sophomore slump/hangover that quite often follows such and incredible debut... However I'm happy to say that after repeatedly listening to this, I am now finding myself unable to stop!! Some of these songs were already familiar to me as they had been released on a few singles or comps and every damn one of these songs is a hit waiting to happen! Personal favorites are the title track "Smart Accessories," the slow building and melodic "Bob Forrest Song," and of course the amazing upbeat "Young Hearts." Hell, it's hard not to like any of these songs!! At times, this album reminds me of seminal bands from the late '70s like the SAINTS or the ONLY ONES. Like I already said: fucking brilliant! Throughout their entire career, Dr. Feelgood never left simple, hard-driving rock & roll behind, and their devotion to the blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base.
The group's original distinctively British R&B sound was centered on Wilko Johnson's choppy guitar style. Along with Johnson, the original band line-up comprised John B. Sparks (bass guitar), John Martin aka The Big Figure (drummer) and Lee Brilleaux (vocals).
Like many pub rock acts, Dr. Feelgood were known primarily for their high energy live performances, although studio albums such as Down by the Jetty (1974) and Malpractice (1975) were also popular. Their breakthrough 1976 live album, Stupidity, reached number one in the UK Albums Chart (their only chart-topper). But after the follow-up Sneakin' Suspicion, Johnson left the group due to perceived conflicts with Brilleaux. Johnson was replaced by John "Gypie" Mayo. With Mayo, the band was never as popular as with Johnson, but still enjoyed their only Top Ten hit single in 1979, with "Milk and Alcohol". The tune was written by Gypie Mayo, with lyrics by band comrade Nick Lowe after witnessing bluesman John Lee Hooker in concert.
