Fans of acid Jazz, rare groove, funky black action sound tracks, and grooved out organ music ala Jimmy McGriff and Richard Groove Holmes (circa the '70s) will be in soul heaven upon purchase of this well mastered well packaged CD... Remember those funky blaxploitation and nitty gritty crime drama soundtracks and of course the cool music during the mandatory "chase" scenes, even on those old TV shows ??? This is all that. And yes, there are tracks with funky orchestral arrangements as well as screaming brass, some Jazzy Rhodes, a Fela Kuti type track and lot's more !

THE DEMONICS 3rd full length record 'Ritual On The Beach' is dripping with tremendously catchy melodies, upbeat dragpunk riffs and references and to the Californian lifestyle. It´s a evil JAN & DEAN beach party gone wrong with guest appearances by 'Wholly Smokes' (MIKE FOX of the DWARVES fame) and legendary underground garage rocker NIKKI CORVETTE doing a duette with Russ on a demonic version of her song 'Girls Like Me' (here : "Boys like me"). The album is an unpretentious blast down the waves & highway to hell! The unbelievable artwork matching the theme is done by Montreals most famous underground artist DIRTY DONNY.

Say You're Sorry 21. Don't Look Back
Great guitars (with some nice fuzz and distortion), cheesy Farfisa, some harmonica... all in all the perfect '65 sound. Good enough to have garnered an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, and a slot opening for the Beatles.
In addition to the relatively well known (or at least, well-anthologized) "Don't Look Back" (written by Billy Vera... how long has this guy been around! ), and their blistering cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy", this disc features a ton of great originals and covers.
The presentation of the tracks includes some interesting false starts, which gives the listener a short glimpse of how the band worked with their producers in the studio. A stupendous collection from tracks from a grossly overlooked band.

For those who enjoy the sound gallery series, here are 16 tracks of pure groovy easy listening treasures. There are some seriously funky songs on this album, though not in the traditional sense. Unfortunately, there are also some cardboard "maybe-recycling-isn't-always-good" songs. However, the instrumentation almost always catches your ears, even if you've heard versions of these songs before. When it's good, you love the feeling of having stumbled upon a rare groove track that no one has heard before. When it's okay, it's decent background music.
Bottom Line: If you're looking for some cool, unusual groove tracks, but don't mind some filler, then a definite buy.

If you're a fan of any of The Methadones' previous efforts then this CD should be in your collection. The Copyrights are cool but here, the Methadones win the competition hands down. This CD should be a definite buy for any pop punk fan.

The Shaky Bird (Part 2) 20. Cherry 21. Little Sally Walker 22. The Weejee Walk 23. Fairy Tales
If the Rivingtons had done nothing else but record "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word" (the two songs the Trashmen ripped off wholesale for "Surfin' Bird," possibly the most delirious, manic rock & roll song ever created), their place in history would be secured. Amazingly, however, those may not even be the best songs on The Liberty Years, a 23-track compilation of just about everything the group recorded for Liberty Records in the early '60s. (The honor may go to the follow-up single, "Mama-Oom-Mow Mow," which is twice as unhinged as the original; "Kickapoo Joy Juice" is a stone classic as well.) Probably the wiggiest of all the vocal harmony groups of the era the Rivingtons' best material is performed with a helter-skelter looseness that belies the obvious skill and talent behind the deceptively complex harmonies and rhymes. Even familiar tunes like "Slippin' and Slidin'" and "Long Tall Sally" are transformed. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

The Ghouster 20. That's How I Love You 21. The Chicken Astronaut
The 5 DuTones are a Chicago Doo Wop phenomenon of the late 50's early 60's. They recorded these songs for One-Derful Records with production and arrangements by Willie Henderson and Monk Higgins. "The Flea" was one of the first records by this group but it did not become a major hit. "Shake A Tail Feather" did. It was probably their biggest hit. Ike and Tina Turner covered it and the Du-Tones were forgotten. This is Doo Wop Soul at its best. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HZ4N4XC1

The Link Quartet were formed in 1991 by Renzo Bassi (bass), Mauarizio Girgenti (hammond), Giulio “Link” Cardini (guitar), and Chuck Bergenzi (drums). Joined by Tony “Face” Bacciocchi (percussion) in 1993, The Link Quartet would spend several years building their reputation as a leading force in the Italian club scene playing their special blend of 6T’s Hammond-fueled beat music.
The first Link Quartet album, simply titled “Episode 1”, and including a somewhat loungier interpretation of the funk sound, solidly demonstrated the bands ability to grasp, and make their own, the spy flavoured tunes by the likes of Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin. “Episode 1” was released in 2001 as a limited run of 200 copies, which managed to find their way around the world via direct Internet sales, but alas they still had not broken out to find international fame.
In 2002, Animal Records reissued “Episode 1”, which gave the band a better shot at global exposure.

A Plea For Tenderness 12. Walk Up the Street 13. Fly Into The Mystery 14. I'm Straight 15. The Mixer 16. Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste 17. Roadrunner

Here is the "rockin'" Modern Lovers captured in their primal heat, bringing down the house to a bemused audience who doesn't quite know what to make of them. One of the charms of the live shows is the way Jonathan and the band switch from heavy, fast songs like "Someone I Care About" to slower, low-key numbers like "Hospital" or "Girlfriend". The sound captured on this is pure fun and enjoyment, tempered with Jonathan's own hearbreak-fueled songs about girls who hang around in the Cezanne wing of the modern museums.

Predating many English punk records by nearly a year, TV Tube Heart is a tuneful mess of crash-and-bash full-throttle punk rock. Better than a lot of the more hyped bands of the time, The Radiators pull out all the stops and came up with a winner first time out. Sadly, they couldn't repeat the excitement of this record. Still and all, this is a great artifact of the era. ~ John Dougan, All Music Guide

A great compilation of rarities, live stuff , rehearsal recordings, and demos from the more rootsy rockin' original incarnation(prior to the Cyril Jordan led Brit Invasion retro/proto - power pop era) of the band with vocalist Roy Loney. A good deal of this material is previously unnissued. The booklet is great also, very informative liner notes by Miriam Linna as well as many never before seen photos. A few tracks are a little rough in the sound quality department, but hey these are rarities, so who knows where the tapes have been, especially outtakes like a cover of "I Can't Explain", a neat live version of "Buddy Can You Spare A Dime" and a smokin' "Heartbreak Hotel".The Supersnazz radio promo is just icing on the cake. Priceless.

Hava Negilah (3:19) 14. Siamese Island (3:18) 15. Jet Age
The Euroboys, or Kare & the Cavemen as they were originally named, first shot to fame as the regular band on a popular Norwegian television show. They played a mixture of early-'60s instrumental pop such as the Shadows, surf, Burt Bacharach-inspired easy listening, and soundtracks from detective series and action movies from the '60s and '70s. Their role in the TV show earned them a record deal with Virgin. The group members had played together in various bands ever since their school days in Harestua, a small town not far from Oslo. As a trio, they released the vinyl single "In the Mood" in 1996 without getting much attention. After adding a fourth member, percussionist Anders Møller, and landing the job on TV, things started to happen. Their debut album, Jet Age, was hailed as a masterpiece by music journalists in Norway, and did quite well in the charts, very unusual for an instrumental album at the time. The band had also become media darlings, always willing to give interviews. Leader and guitar hero Knut Schreiner made bombastic and often arrogant comments whenever he had the opportunity, acting as if the Euroboys were already superstars.
